1848-1923, American

William Preston Phelps was a plein air painter. In 1876, he travelled to Europe and began studying at the Royal Academy of Art in Munich. He later moved to New York and then back to Europe with his friend William Meritt Chase.

Framed oil on canvas, 24 x 36 inches. Signed in the lower left. The subject is likely his family homestead in Chesham, New Hampshire.

Etching, image size 11 3/4 x 22 1/2 inches, 1981, pencil signed and annotated "artists proof." A wintry view of the chapel on the campus of UMass Amherst, where the artist was a professor from 1971-2002.

Grove of Trees

A fine pencil sketch of a grove of trees with a landscape in the background by Dexter Dawes, measuring 7 1/2 x 11 inches on a medium weight drawing paper. Dawes summered in Marlboro, NH surrounded by beautiful gardens with views of Mount Monadnock which became the inspiration for many of his lithographs, drawings and paintings. He belonged to a number of associations including the National Arts Club.
