Watercolor by American artist Lowell Ellsworth Smith. Signed in the lower right and dated 1964. Painting measures 10 7/8 x 23 inches on heavy weight watercolor paper. Lowell Ellsworth Smith was born in Canton, Ohio in 1924. He attended Miami University in Ohio (BFA) and graduated from Famous Artists Schools in Westport, Connecticut. This painting truly captures the luminosity of the winter sky, the long blue shadows, and the detail of the long grass in the half-melted field in the foreground.

Maria Sybilla Merian
1922-2000, American

This is a very fine portrait of 17th century artist and naturalist Maria Sybilla Merian by Leonard Baskin. Etching in colors, plate size 17 1/2 x 14 1/2 inches, published in 1969 in an edition of 90, cat: Fern & O'Sullivan- 550, pencil signed and numbered, framed. In the era of abstract expressionism, Leonard Baskin’s work was always representational, with a strong classical influence. He drew inspiration from many artists of the past, and in the 1950s and 1960s created series of portraits of the artists he admired.

Paul Daniel Ortlip was a well known landscape and portrait artist from Fort Lee, NJ. Born into an artistic family, he studied in NY and Paris. After serving in the military he became the participating artist for NASA, the official US Navy Artist and was first commissioned by the White House to paint portraits of the astronauts. Later, he also did a portrait of John F. Kennedy. His works are housed in the Smithsonian Institution's National Air and Space Museum and the George H.W. Bush Presidential Library.
