Painting

Running Before the Gale
1879-1967, American

This is a stunning painting by noted American marine artist Frank Vining Smith (1879-1967). This dramatic scene of a ship with foul weather rigging is painted in oils on canvas and measures 36 x 42 inches, painted c. 1930. It is signed by the artist in the lower right corner and comes in a very fine modern gilt frame. Frank Vining Smith was born and raised on Cape Cod Massachusetts and had a strong affinity with the ocean from a very young age. He studied at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston under Frank Benson, Philip Hale and Edward C.

Print

Over the Tree Tops
1862-1951, American

This rare 1915 Benson etching measures 5 x 7 7/8 inches. It is signed, numbered and titled on the lower margin. In the Ordeman catalogue it is #84. Printed on Normandy vellum, only 54 proofs were made of which fifty are signed and numbered. Benson was a very successful painter and a member of "The Ten" along with Childe Hassam and J. Alden Weir, before he began the sporting paintings and etchings for which he is most widely known. He was a founding member of the Boston Guild of Artists and a long time teacher at the Museum School in Boston.
