Painting

Incredible British Tonalist Landscape
1820-1845, Active, British

Oil on canvas, 16 x 24 inches, signed and dated 1851 lower right. Although initially known for his sporting scenes his work really excels in his atmospheric landscapes. The powerful light of the sunset reflecting off the dark, rugged landscape suggests qualities similar to Joseph M.W. Turner, the father of British Romanticism. The human in this scene is of small consequence compared to the majestic beauty surrounding her. Jones exhibited work at the British Institute, The Royal Academy and the Royal Society of British Artists.

Print

The Boat Swing
1905-1990, British

This is an energetic scene of children swinging by British artist Eileen Soper. Etching with drypoint, image size is 10 7/8 x 7 3/8 inches, 1924, pencil signed, titled in the lower margin. Eileen Soper began etching as a young girl, and at age 16 exhibited her work at the Royal Academy in London. She specialized in scenes of children at play, which she depicted in beautifully loose, spontaneous drypoint lines. Later in life she illustrated several children's books, including 'The Fantastic Five'.
