Lee-Hankey was a very gifted drypoint artist known for his portrait studies of the local folk of Brittany.

Heavy Surf at Sunset
1832-1895, American

This is a beautiful luminist style seascape by Mauritz Frederik Hendrik De Haas, one of the preeminent marine and landscape painters of the 19th century. Oil on canvas, 24 x 40 inches, c. 1880, signed on the lower left, in an ornate period gilt frame. Born in Holland, De Haas studied at the Academy of Fine Arts and at The Hague. At 27 years old he immigrated to the US and opened a studio in NYC. He painted exquisite marine and landscape views, and was known for his masterful ability to capture the full range of light reflecting off a stormy surf or the moon reflecting off a calm sea.
