Portrait of a Young Woman
1862-1946, Italian/American

This is a sweetly intimate portrait of a young woman, oil on board, 6 5/8 x 4 5/8 inches, c. 1920, signed lower right, framed. John Califano grew up in Italy and began showing his work as a young man, winning a gold medal in Naples, Italy. In 1881 he emigrated to the United States where he lived for several years in Chicago before settling in California. He was known for his California landscapes as well as portraits and genre scenes and showed his work at the National Academy of Design, New York, and the Art Institute of Chicago.

Road to Bristol, Vermont

A beautiful drypoint etching by the New England artist, Chauncey Foster Ryder, measuring 9 3/4 x 11 7/8 inches, pencil signed with Chicago Society of Etchers blind stamp on the l.l., in an edition of 325, 1943. Ryder studied at the Art Institute and Smith's Academy in Chicago before enrolling at the Academie Julien in Paris where he studied for two years. His work was exhibited at the Salon from 1903 to 1909.
