Oil on canvas, image size 21 x 26 1/2 inches, ornate period gilt frame, signed l.l. "Max Weyl". Born in Germany but brought to the US as a child, Weyl became one of the most popular landscape painters of the Washington D.C. area. In 1879 he traveled to Europe and was greatly influenced by the Barbizon style and for the next two decades his landscapes of the D.C. area won him renown.


"New Hampshire" Dawn

This very detailed wood engraving by Julius Lankes measures 5 1/4 x 3 3/4 inches and is numbered, signed, titled and dated on medium weight laid paper. Lankes attended the Art Students' League of Buffalo and the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. His father worked in a lumber mill and used to bring home scrapes of wood. "It was like getting a daily present, " wrote Lankes. His work was heavily influenced by the Arts and Crafts Movement and by William Morris. He illustrated work for Robert Frost and Beatrix Potter and collaborated with Rockwell Kent on the "Doremus Series".
