Painting

Harbor Nocturne

This is an atmospheric moonlit scene of a ship coming in to harbor, painted in oil on Academy Board and measuring 15 1/8 x 11 inches. It is obscurely signed "H. G. Lask..?" in the lower right corner; although we have not been able to determine the identity of the artist, this painting is certainly done by a skilled hand, very much in the style of James Gale Tyler. A very fine 19th century painting in an ornate period gilt frame.

Print

Tea House - Ocha
1907-1992, Japanese

This original color woodblock print by Kiyoshi Saito measures 10 x 15 inches and is signed in white ink and is stamped. This is a first edition, framed, c. 1950. Saito studied both Western and Japanese art in Tokyo in the early 20th century, and although originally a painter, by 1940 he concentrated exclusively on color woodblock prints. He became one of the foremost Japanese artists of the mid 20th century, known for his distinct style of flattened, geometric, almost abstracted compositions in rich earthy colors.
