An truly angelic portrait of a young woman attributed to the famous portrait artist, Thomas Sully. This oil on canvas measures 24 x 20 inches, sight size 21 1/2 x 17 1/2 inch oval, c. 1840. It is unsigned and in a period frame. Sully was born in England and at nine years old his parents and his eight siblings immigrated to South Carolina. Noticing his talents at an early age he was sent to study under his brother in law, Jean Belzons, a French miniaturist. This ended badly and he chose to study with his brother Lawrence for the next few years.

This is a an original color woodblock print by Utagawa Yoshitsuya from his series '54 Battle Stories of Hideyoshi". The image size is 12 7/8 x 8 7/8 inches, 1864, lifetime impression, framed. Hideyoshi was a 16th century Samurai warrior who rose through the ranks of the army to become general, leading the forces of Japan in several brutal conflicts. In the centuries since his death, Hideyoshi has become an almost mythological figure, the stories of his exploits passed down through the generations and elaborated into legends.
