Painting

Portrait of a Young Boy

This is a remarkable portrait painted in oil on cradled board, measuring 15 1/2 x 11 5/8 inches. This painting bears the faint signature and date "J. B. Greuze 1776" leading us to believe it may be painted by the French master Jean Baptiste Greuze (1725-1805), although we have been unable to authenticate it. Because of this we are listing it as "European School", but it really is quite well painted and in the very distinct style of Greuze.

Print

Color Woodblock print, 14 x 9 1/2, some staining in image

Drawing

Backview
1911-1992, American

This signed, charcoal on paper, portrait is by Paul Lewis Clemens. Sight size is 16 5/8 x 13 1/8 inches and is presented in a wooden frame. It is identified and titled on a label from James Vigeveno Galleries, Westwood Hills, Los Angeles, California, on the paper backing. A portrait, figure, genre and garden painter, Clemens studied at the University of Wisconsin with Oscar Hagen and the Art Institute of Chicago. He is best known for his movie star portraits of the Hollywood era in the 40s, but was also gifted for other styles, from French impressionism to Dutch linearity.
