Setting Sail, Early Morning
1850-1921, American

Oil on canvas, 12 x 20 inches, 1881, signed and dated, in a period gilt frame. As a young man, Johnson was a sailor and one of only twelve survivors aboard a ship that caught fire and sank of the coast of South Africa. He returned to his native Boston, Massachusetts, and studied art with marine painter William E. Norton. Johnson went on to become very well known for his nautical and marine paintings in the later part of the 19th century.

The Victor
1884-1969, American

Woodblock, image size 8 7/8 x 9 1/2 inches, pencil signed, titled and edition number, "Ernest W. Watson", "27/100" and "The Victor". Framed. A New England native, Watson graduated from Massachusetts College of Art and later in life co-founded the Berkshire Summer School of Art. He possessed a genuine desire for all to be able to understand the nuances of art and so began a lifelong career of creating instructional books and magazines on how to draw, paint and sculpt.
