Oil on artist board, 12 x 16 inches, unsigned, c. 1930, unsigned. Born in Germany, Saling emigrated to America through Ellis Island in 1893 at the age of 17. He was a successful decorator and artist first in New York City, then in Hartford, Connecticut. In the late 1920s, he moved to Lyme, Connecticut, the setting for many of his landscapes. He was a member of many prestigious artist's groups, including the Salmagundi Club, the Connecticut Academy of Fine Arts, the Connecticut League of Art Students and the Springfield Art League.

Two hand colored period lithographs, each image size approx. 6 1/2 x 8 1/2 inches, c. 1850. On both prints "Drawn from Nature by J.J. Audubon, F.R.S.F.L.S." is inscribed l.l., "On Stone by Wm. E. Hitchcock" centered under each image and "Lith. Printed & Colored by J.T. Bowen, Phil." l.r. At the top left of the shrew image is "No. 15" and top right is "Plate LXXV." Upper left of the bottom image "No. 16 " is inscribed and upper right is "Plate LXXX". Both prints feature very rich original colors but have tape residue and toning around the edges of the sheet, not effecting the image area.
