Painting

A Woodland Spring
1857-1927, American

This is a richly painted, atmospheric woodland scene by the New England artist Joseph H. Greenwood. Oil on board, 6 x 8 inches, 1898, signed and dated on the lower right. Greenwood started out as a factory worker and then a teacher and eventually became Worcester's most noted landscape painter who preferred to paint the natural beauty of rural New England's four seasons. He was influenced by his contemporaries, George Inness and Willard Metcalf and studied in the Boston area with R. Swain Gifford and John Appleton Brown.

Print

Christ Child Bookplate
1890-1988, English

This wood engraving by Philip Hagreen measures 3 3/4 x 2 1/4 inches and is plate signed on the lower margin. Hagreen was a gifted wood engraver and illustrator. Founder of the Society of Wood Engravers in the early 20th. century he became a master of the small format creating over 170 bookplates. He studied lettering with Eric Gill and was known for his use of white lines and spaces. A religious man, he withdrew from the artistic life to follow in the Lord's footsteps and in so doing became one of the most under appreciated engravers of the time.
