Heavy Surf at Sunset
1832-1895, American

This is a beautiful luminist style seascape by Mauritz Frederik Hendrik De Haas, one of the preeminent marine and landscape painters of the 19th century. Oil on canvas, 24 x 40 inches, c. 1880, signed on the lower left, in an ornate period gilt frame. Born in Holland, De Haas studied at the Academy of Fine Arts and at The Hague. At 27 years old he immigrated to the US and opened a studio in NYC. He painted exquisite marine and landscape views, and was known for his masterful ability to capture the full range of light reflecting off a stormy surf or the moon reflecting off a calm sea.

Pencil signed and editioned etching by American artist Harold Kerr Eby, created and printed in 1935 in an edition of 100, image measures 8 1/4 X 12 1/2 inches. The scene was most likely done in Connecticut. Signature has the "imp" after the artists name meaning that he printed this image himself.
