Monadnock  View

This hilltop view of Mt. Monadnock by Dexter Dawes, measures 10 1/4 x 13 3/4 inches and is pencil signed and dated 1932. Dawes was born in Englewood, NJ and went on to study at New York City's Art Student League. He summered in Marlboro, NH surrounded by beautiful gardens with views of Mount Monadnock which became the inspiration for many of his lithographs and paintings. He belonged to a number of associations including the National Arts Club.

Engraving by James Smillie after the painting by Thomas Cole, 1860, published by B. B. Russell, Boston. This is a fully lettered proof with the poem by J H Daniels, and the inscription, "From the original painting by Thomas Cole in the possession of Rev'd Gorham D Abbott, Spingler Institute, New York." In a period walnut frame.

This signed, charcoal on paper, portrait is by Paul Lewis Clemens. Sight size is 16 5/8 x 13 1/8 inches and is presented in a wooden frame. It is identified and titled on a label from James Vigeveno Galleries, Westwood Hills, Los Angeles, California, on the paper backing. A portrait, figure, genre and garden painter, Clemens studied at the University of Wisconsin with Oscar Hagen and the Art Institute of Chicago. He is best known for his movie star portraits of the Hollywood era in the 40s, but was also gifted for other styles, from French impressionism to Dutch linearity.
