Lake in the Mountains

Oil on canvas, 20 x 30 inches, c. 1875, signed "SL Gerry," l.l, in what appears to be the original gilt frame. Samuel Gerry was a self-taught artist known for his majestic mountain landscapes, especially of the White Mountains in New Hampshire. Although he didn't have much formal training, he was greatly influenced by the work of Thomas Cole and A. B Durand, as well as some artists of the European schools. In the 1840s, Gerry was considered the leader of the White Mountain School of landscape painters.
