Painting

At Bellerive, Lake Geneva

This is a very fine painting of a man and his dog fishing in Lake Geneva, Switzerland. Oil on canvas, 18 x 26 inches, c. 1880, signed in the lower left corner, in an ornate period gilt frame, most likely the original. Another very similar painting by Vuagnat of the same location is in the collection of the Victoria Museum, Melbourne, Australia.

Print

The Evangelist
1903-1979, American

Framed lithograph from 1941. Number 27 in an edition of 100. Pencil titled, editioned, signed and dated by the artist. Image measures 13 9/16 x 9 7/8 inches in 21 1/4 x 26 1/2 inch frame. The subject is deMartelly's New Hampshire neighbor, Lizzie Osgood. The Osgood sisters had a reputation for their devotion to the Bible, which deMartelly makes light of in this picture. The banner behind Osgood's head and the black cat in the upper right emphasize Martelly's suspicion of organized religion. Cat: Zink 19. One of his independent regionalist lithographs.

Drawing

The Country Manor
$1600.00
1808-1878, British

This is a very grand watercolor by noted British artist Joseph Nash (1808-1878). The sight size of this painting is 26 1/8 x 18 3/4 inches, it was painted in 1846 and is signed and dated in the lower right corner. Joseph Nash studied art and architecture with Augustus Charles Pugin, becoming known for his finely detailed images of British architecture, from cathedrals to castles and manors. He would very often place a group of people in the foreground of his compositions, in a way that brought life and energy to the architecture, as can be seen in this image.
