Incredible British Tonalist Landscape
1820-1845, Active, British

Oil on canvas, 16 x 24 inches, signed and dated 1851 lower right. Although initially known for his sporting scenes his work really excels in his atmospheric landscapes. The powerful light of the sunset reflecting off the dark, rugged landscape suggests qualities similar to Joseph M.W. Turner, the father of British Romanticism. The human in this scene is of small consequence compared to the majestic beauty surrounding her. Jones exhibited work at the British Institute, The Royal Academy and the Royal Society of British Artists.

This 1948 wood engraving by the American artist Grace Albee measures 6 5/8 x 8 inches, pencil signed and titled. Albee studied at the Rhode Island School of Design and was known for her scenes of rural life. Her works are in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National Gallery and the Boston Public Library. Label with artist provenance included.

This pencil drawing by Jack Levine measures 5 1/2 x 5 inches. It is pencil signed on the lower right. Levine was best known for his satires on modern life and political corruption. Born in South Boston into a large family, his drawing abilities were apparent at an young age. At 14 he entered a painting program at Harvard and a few years later was employed in the Works Progress Administration. His lower class childhood was often a subject of his paintings and he became known for "telling it like it is".
