This etching by the American artist, Lemuel David Eldred, measures 13 5/8 x 22 1/2 inches, pencil signed, created in 1889. This scene shows everyday life in the port city of Algiers with the ancient structure of the French Admiralty Building serving as its grand entrance. This is a rare large version of the one in the Benac book. Eldred was born near the whaling community of New Bedford, Massachusetts and is known for his landscapes and harbor scenes. He painted with William Bradford in Fairhaven Conn.
