Autumn Woods
1848-1923, American

A superb autumn landscape by New Hampshire artist William Preston Phelps, this painting measures 20 x 30 inches, painted with oils on board, c. 1900. It is signed "W P Phelps" in a tasteful modern frame. Known as the "Painter of Monadnock", Phelps lived most of his life in Dublin, NH, with the exception of several years he spent studying art in Europe. He painted many scenes of the area landscape of farms, fields and forests, most of which were set against the backdrop of the majestic Mount Monadnock.

A group of eight original wood engravings by Nora S. Unwin, image size of each 1 5/8 x 1 5/8 inches, grouped in a common mat, in a 18 1/2 x 13 1/2 inch frame, pencil signed. These wood engravings were given to the previous owner directly by the artist.

Pen and ink by Dexter Dawes measuring 7 3/4 x 10 1/4 inches. "White Birches H. Hill June 29 - 1915" written in the artist hand on the lower margin.
