Cabin by the Lake
1854-1927, American

This is a luminous scene of a cabin by a still lake with the glowing colors of the setting sun lingering in the sky, casting blue shadows over summer landscape. Pastel on paper, sight size 12 3/4 x 17 inches, c. 1900, signed in the lower right corner. This pastel comes tastefully displayed in a period maple frame. Clarence Braley was a Massachusetts artist who specialized in pastel and watercolor landscapes. He was a member of the New Bedford Art Association and exhibited his work at the Boston Art Club and the Art Institute of Chicago.

Recess - The District School

This etching by George Shorey measures 7 1/8 x 11 7/8 inches and is pencil signed on the lower right margin. Games of marbles, jump-rope, crack the whip, baseball, tag, telling of tall tales, the teacher admonishing a student, and let us not forget the sneaking out of detention game all rendered in this one image illustrates Shorey's attention to detail and his ability to create energy and movement on a two dimensional surface.

Designed by the artist for the family's 1944 Christmas card, done on lightweight paper. It measures 7 1/4 x 8 3/8 inches. Dawes spent many years in the Marlboro, NH area drawing and painting the incredible natural beauty that surrounded him.
