Portrait of a Young Woman
1783-1872, American

An truly angelic portrait of a young woman attributed to the famous portrait artist, Thomas Sully. This oil on canvas measures 24 x 20 inches, sight size 21 1/2 x 17 1/2 inch oval, c. 1840. It is unsigned and in a period frame. Sully was born in England and at nine years old his parents and his eight siblings immigrated to South Carolina. Noticing his talents at an early age he was sent to study under his brother in law, Jean Belzons, a French miniaturist. This ended badly and he chose to study with his brother Lawrence for the next few years.
