Portrait of a Young Girl
1818-1882, American

This is an incredibly lifelike original portrait by American artist Thomas Le Clear. Oil on canvas, 24 x 20 inches, sight size 21 x 17 inch oval, c. 1865, signed, in an ornate period gilt frame. Thomas Le Clear began painting as a child, selling his first painting at the age of 12. He was primarily self-taught, although he did study for a time with Henry Inman in New York City. Le Clear became a very well regarded artist known for his portraits and genre scenes and painted portraits of many important figures of his time, including Ulysses S. Grant, John Bell, and William Cullen Bryant.

This photogravure by Albert Goupil was taken from a limited edition, eight volume, folio sized set of books entitled “Art of the World,”. Published by the French art gallery Boussod, Valadon & Co. in 1893. The original painting was by Guillaume Dubufe and was originally exhibited at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago in honor of the 400th anniversary of Columbus' discovery of the new world.
