Incredible British Tonalist Landscape
1820-1845, Active, British

Oil on canvas, 16 x 24 inches, signed and dated 1851 lower right. Although initially known for his sporting scenes his work really excels in his atmospheric landscapes. The powerful light of the sunset reflecting off the dark, rugged landscape suggests qualities similar to Joseph M.W. Turner, the father of British Romanticism. The human in this scene is of small consequence compared to the majestic beauty surrounding her. Jones exhibited work at the British Institute, The Royal Academy and the Royal Society of British Artists.

The Birdman

This 1919 etching and aquatint by John Taylor Arms measures 7 1/2 x 5 inches. This is the third state in an edition of 50. Printed by Frederick Reynolds, it is pencil signed by both the artist and the printer on the lower margin. Framed. John Taylor Arms was one of the foremost American printmakers of the 20th century, known for his exquisite compositions and exacting details which gave his etchings a very realistic, almost photographic appearance.
