Painting

New England Farm in Spring
1848-1923, American

This is a luminous springtime landscape by New Hampshire artist William Preston Phelps. Oil on canvas, 12 x 18 inches, c. 1890s, signed in the lower right corner, in an ornate period gilt frame, with a label from the Godwin Gallery. Known as the "Painter of Monadnock", Phelps lived most of his life in Dublin and Chesham, NH, with the exception of several years he spent studying art in Europe. He painted many scenes of the area landscape of farms, fields and forests, many of which were set against the backdrop of the majestic Mount Monadnock.

Print
