Setting Sail in the Moonlight
1832-1895, American

This is a truly remarkable luminous scene of fishing boats under the moonlight, with several figures watching from the shore. Oil on canvas, 24 x 34 inches, 1883, signed and dated lower right. Mauritz de Haas was born in Holland and studied at the Academy of Fine Arts, Rotterdam before emigrating to the United States in 1857. He set up a studio in New York and became well known for his atmospheric land and seascapes of the New York area as well as images of his native Holland.

Etching with aquatint, image size 8 3/8 x 12 inches, "La Tauromaquia",1816 with blindstamp, sheet size 13 7/8 x 17 3/4 inches. From the 5th edition out of 8, printed in 1921 in an edition of 200. La Tauromaquia is Goya's series of 33 etchings depicting various elements of bullfighting.
