Summer Pasture

A sunny New England landscape by Dexter Dawes, the sight size of this watercolor is 13 3/4 x 19 3/4, painted in 1935 and is signed and dated by the artist; in the original frame. Dawes was born in Englewood, NJ and went on to study at New York City's Art Student League. He summered in Marlboro, NH surrounded by beautiful gardens with views of Mount Monadnock which became the inspiration for many of his lithographs and paintings. He belonged to a number of associations including the National Arts Club.

Etching with drypoint, plate size 21 1/2 x 13 1/4 inches, c. 1905, edition of about 100, published by Sagot with blindstamp in lower right margin, pencil signed. Helleu began his art career when he enrolled at the Ecole des Beaux Arts and worked as an apprentice for Theodore Deck, decorating ceramic plates with women's portraits. He became friends with many artists of La Belle Epoch, including John Singer Sargent, Whistler, Tissot, Monet and Rodin, and became well known for his elegant portraits of women of French society.
