Heavy Surf at Sunset
1832-1895, American

This is a beautiful luminist style seascape by Mauritz Frederik Hendrik De Haas, one of the preeminent marine and landscape painters of the 19th century. Oil on canvas, 24 x 40 inches, c. 1880, signed on the lower left, in an ornate period gilt frame. Born in Holland, De Haas studied at the Academy of Fine Arts and at The Hague. At 27 years old he immigrated to the US and opened a studio in NYC. He painted exquisite marine and landscape views, and was known for his masterful ability to capture the full range of light reflecting off a stormy surf or the moon reflecting off a calm sea.

Twilight East Hampton
1842-1899, American

A beautiful twilight etching of East Hampton, NY by the American artist, Mary Nimmo Moran, measuring 7 3/4 x 11 7/8 inches, a very rare image, pencil signed, 1880, exhibited at the New York Etching Club in 1882. Moran made a smaller version of this image which is much more common. Mary Nimmo Moran was one of the leading women etchers of the late 19th century, and along with her husband, Thomas Moran was at the forefront of the etching revival.
