Landscape with Sheep
1809-1889, Belgian

This is a beautiful painting of a ewe and her lambs in a summer meadow, with mallard ducks swimming nearby. It is painted with oils on panel and measures 5 1/2 x 7 5/8 inches, 1860, signed and dated lower right, in a period gilt frame. There is an inscription in French on the back of the board, written in the artist's hand, but we have been unable to decipher it. Van Severdonck was a Belgian artist known for his small scale landscapes and images of farm animals, especially sheep.

This etching and drypoint by German artist Kathe Kollwitz measures 11 x 11 5/8 inches, printed mid-century by Von der Becke, with the blindstamp in the lower right margin. This image is part of a series entitled "A Weavers Revolt", in which Kollwitz portrays the workers' misery, hope and eventually their doom. Heavily influenced by the Old Masters, Rembrandt, Durer and Daumier, this image is one of her most widely acclaimed prints. Ferdinand Roten Galleries label included.

Watercolor on paper, 3 3/8 x 4 5/8 inches, signed in ink lower left. Housed in a period frame, possibly original to the painting, but recently rematted with archival materials. An old label on the back gives the title and location and is also signed by the artist.
