Fishing in a Mountain Stream

This is a beautiful mountain landscape by German artist Julius Rose. Oil on canvas, 8 3/8 x 12 1/2 inches, c. 1890s, in a period gilt frame, with a label with illegible title on the back. Rose studied at the Dresden Academy under Hummer and exhibited at the Paris Salon. He was known for his landscapes of the Bavarian Alps and Norwegian fjords.

This drawing by Dexter Dawes measures 21 1/4 x 14 1/2 inches and is dated "July 7, 1929" on the lower margin. Dawes was born in Englewood, NJ and went on to study at New York City's Art Student League. He summered in Marlboro, NH surrounded by beautiful gardens with views of Mount Monadnock which became the inspiration for many of his lithographs and drawings. He belonged to a number of associations including the National Arts Club
