1848-1923, American

William Preston Phelps was a plein air painter. In 1876, he travelled to Europe and began studying at the Royal Academy of Art in Munich. He later moved to New York and then back to Europe with his friend William Meritt Chase.

Framed oil on canvas, 24 x 36 inches. Signed in the lower left. The subject is likely his family homestead in Chesham, New Hampshire.

Etching by Nicolas Mignard after the frescoes of Annibale Carracci depicting scenes from Homer's Odyssey. Plate size 11 3/4 x 13 5/8 inches, published by Pierre Mariette in 1637, with lettering in Latin below the image. Printed on a very early watermarked laid type paper.
