Paris Nude study

This one is a mystery. We found it at a local antique shop. It is a fragment, an unstretched canvas, unsigned. It looks like someone cut this out of a frame in the distant past. We found on the back of the canvas a stamp from the art shop in Paris "Hardy Alan", their address on rue du Chert Midi was the address of the store up until 1907 when they moved to a different location. It was a very important artist supply where many of the leading artists of the period bought their paints and canvases. Those artists included, John Singer Sargent, James Whistler, Renoir, Fantin Latour and even Van Gogh. The look of this painting does suggest that it may be a study, or an unfinished work by an important artist. Its possible that the original signature was cut away when the piece was removed from the original wooden stretcher. The canvas measures 15X21 inches, it is in a nice period frame under glass. The frame dates back to the mid to late 19th century. The frame is missing some chips here and there. The painting has some wrinkles and scrapes but could easily be fixed or restretched. Everything is stable, the painting could use a light cleaning.. Having said that, in its current state it does look very fine.
