This listing is for a pair of images by American artist Isac Friedlander. The title is "Despair", they appear as a framed wood engraving dated 1931 and also the pencil study for the engraving also signed and dated 1931. Both pieces are in individual frames. The wood engraving has an image size of 12X7 inches, signed lower right in pencil titled and dated lower left. The drawing measures 12X7 1/4 inches, also signed and dated in the lower border. This is a very scarce image by this important Latvian American artist. Isac Friedlander (1890-1968) was born in Latvia. In 1912 he went to Italy where he met and worked with Russian artist Maxim Gorky. During this period he also received his only art training, studying etching, drawing and relief printing at the Academy of Rome. In 1937, he emigrated to New York where he worked full time as an artist until his death. He is best known for his woodcuts and etchings, and many museums have works by the artist, including the Smithsonian, Bibliotheque Nationale, and the Brooklyn Museum.
