Soupe a Trois Sous

This is an original etching by American artist James Abbott McNeil Whistler. The title of this image is "Soupe A Trois Sous", It was created and printed in 1859 and according to the Glascow catalog this image was never published. The etching measures 5 7/8X8 7/8 inches, printed on a thin Japan laid paper, very fine condition, nice use of plate tone in the foreground. Soupe à trois sous ' is French for 'Soup for three sous', which was very cheap soup, and implies that the restaurant was a very basic café/bar. Whistler's first title, 'Café des Pieds Monilles' implies a particular café. 'Café des Pieds Monilles' is almost certainly a garbled reference to the Parisian Café des Pieds-Humides ('Café of the Wet Feet'). However, this title seems to have been immediately rejected in favour of the more familiar ' Soupe à trois sous '.(glascow)

Hulingham

This is a fine impression of the original etching by James Abbott McNeill Whistler titled: "Hurlingham", it was created and printed circa 1879. This etching is the 4th state of 4. The image measures 5 3/8X7 7/8 inches, printed on a medium weight laid type paper with watermark. This is a rich image with fine use of plate tone in the sky and water.
superb condition apart from two old pieces of tape residue upper corners, well away from the image area. Hurlingham is on the river Thames in Fulham, west London, across the river from Wandsworth. Hurlingham Park looks south, across the river, to Wandsworth Park. It was a site where both amateur and professional activities overlapped. Thames barges, boats and tugs as well as rowboats and skiffs crowded the broad river. Hurlingham itself was a sporting venue for London Society, including Royalty, to watch and play polo, while the public could watch boat races from the riverbank. This etching appears in the Kennedy catalog as image number 181.

San Francisco Yacht Harbor

An early etching by Gene Kloss, this is a very richly inked scene of boats moored on the quiet harbor waters of San Francisco Bay. The image size is 9 x 10 inches, published in 1935 in a small edition of 75, pencil signed, titled and numbered. Gene Kloss was born in California as Alice Geneva Glasier, changing her name when she married the poet, Phillip Kloss in 1925. On their honeymoon, the Kloss's traveled to and fell in love with Taos, New Mexico. For over a decade they split their time between Taos and Berkely, CA; Gene Kloss becoming a central figure in the artistic communities of both states. This etching is in pristine condition and features a richly inked impression with superb plate tone on a heavy weight wove type paper.

L'Enfant Prodigue

This is an original etching by French artist Jacques James Tissot. It is titled:" L'Enfant Prodigue", from the series The Prodigal son in modern life. "The fatted calf" This etching was from the first state of 2 in an edition of 100. This edition was done before the type set text under the image and this one is quite rare that it is also hand signed by the artist in the lower right corner as well as plate signed and stamped with the red seal in the lower left. The image measures 10 3/4X14 1/2 inches, the platemark measures 12 1/4X14 1/2 inches. Printed on a wove type medium weight paper. A finely inked impression....

Coming to Anchor

Catalog: Gilcrease 51, Klackner 43, iii/iii. roulette and sandpaper ground. Some even light toning. A well-inked impression of this rare early American etching. Plate size measures 14 7/8 x 29 3/4 inches in a 20 3/4 x 35 1/2 inch frame.

Helleu began his art career when he enrolled at the Ecole des Beaux Arts and worked as an apprentice for Theodore Deck, decorating ceramic plates with women's portraits. He became friends with many artists of La Belle Epoch, including John Singer Sargent, Whistler, Tissot, Monet and Rodin, and became well known for his elegant portraits of women of French society. The young girl in this portrait is Helleu's daughter Ellen.

C. 1912. Pencil signed in the lower right. Plate initialed and dated in the lower left. Plate measures 11 3/4 x 7 3/4 inches on 16 1/2 x 11 1/2 inch watermarked Van Gelder Zonin laid paper. Catalog: Hjert and Hjert 209. A rare print. This is an excellent portrayal of a pensive woman with a rich drypoint burr. Anders Zorn's artistic talents were obvious at an early age. At 15 he entered the Royal Swedish Academy of Art in Stockholm and at 20 years old, at a student exhibition, he entered his watercolor painting "In Mourning" which now hangs in the National Museum in Stockholm. This recognition was the start of a long and accomplished career for Zorn.

This is an elegant portrait of the wife of composer Bobby Hazelton Ross by British printmaker Gerald Brockhurst. Etching, image size 8 3/8 x 6 3/4 inches, published in an edition of 111 in 1929, pencil signed. Born in England and found to be artistically talented at an early age, Gerald Brockhurst attended the Royal Academy Schools. A scholarship enabled him to study in France and Italy where the work of the great masters, especially Botticelli and da Vinci, had a lasting influenced on him. He became well known for his classically styled portraits etched with a remarkable sense of detail and texture."Viba" was exhibited at the Royal Academy and the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers in 1929. This atmospheric etching is a great example of the delicate lines and precise detail for which Arms was known. This image won several awards in the early 1940s; the Mrs. Henry F Noyes Memorial Prize for best print at the 27th Annual Exhibition of the Society of American Etchers, New York, N.Y. 1943; the First Prize in Black and White Section at the 12th Annual Exhibition of the Irvington Art and Museum Association, Irvington, N. A beautiful subtly colored etching and aquatint, image size 19 1/4 x 13 5/8 inches, 1907, pencil signed in the lower left corner of the image. One of the leading French artists of the ‘Belle Epoch,’ Robbe studied at the Academie Julien and the Ecole des Beaux Artes, becoming a master of the aquatint medium. He developed much of his own aquatint techniques, which enabled him to create his uniquely painterly, richly colored images. Many of Robbe's compositions capture intimate personal moments, such as this image of a woman adjusting her hat in a mirror before going out.

Plate measures 23 x 13 1/2 inches on 24 1/2 x 16 3/4 inch wove type paper. A well inked, captivating portrait. Helleu began his art career when he enrolled at the Ecole des Beaux Arts and worked as an apprentice for Theodore Deck, decorating ceramic plates with women's portraits. He became friends with many artists of La Belle Epoch, including John Singer Sargent, Whistler, Tissot, Monet and Rodin, and became well known for his elegant portraits of women of French society. He traveled between France and America, and in 1912 was commissioned to create the astrological ceiling decoration in New York's Grand Central Station.

Sara Smiling

Colored drypoint from 1904. Catalog: Breeskin 195. This is the only known state, some impressions in color (like this one). A delicate portrait that captures the subject well. Plate measures 8 3/4 x 6 inches on 10 x 7 1/2 inch wove paper. Cassatt originally only pulled one or two proofs from these plates. Cassatt tried to have them printed 20 years after their creation, but a patron of hers insisted that she had printed them before and they should be dated, as they were a second edition. Cassatt insisted that they were a first edition and, suspecting the patron of trying to get the prints for less money, refused to sign or date them, which is why this print has neither a date nor a signature. Mary Cassatt was one of three women to exhibit with the Impressionists group, as well as being the only American. She is best known for her portraits of mothers and children in their daily life. Cassatt studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts from 1861 to 1865, and moved to France in 1866, where she painted alongside Renoir, Degas, and Sisley.
