A richly inked original etching, image size 8 7/8 x 11 3/4 inches, c. 1930, pencil signed. Gifford Beal grew up in New York City and at the age of 13 began studying art with William Merritt Chase before attending Princeton University and then the Art Students League of New York. Later in life he taught at the Art Students League and was elected the president of the organization. Beal's work is in the collection of many museums today, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; The Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; the Art Institute of Chicago, the Detroit Institute of Arts, and the Florence Griswald Museum, Connecticut.
