Les Glaneuses, The Gleaners

This is an original etching by Jean Francois Millet titled: "Les Glaneuses, The Gleaners. It was created in 1855 and printed on a laid type Japan paper. The image measures 7 1/2X10 inches, printed in a brown toned ink. This is the second state of two. The sheet size measures 9 3/4X13 inches. This etching is in very fine condition, never dipped or cleaned. There are two old spots of tape residue on the upper corners of the sheet but more than an inch away from the image. There is also a tiny hole in the bottom edge of the sheet but also well out side of the image area, at least 1 1/2 inches away. A beautiful and rich impression, nice use of plate-tone throughout. The etching of The Gleaners came before the painting of the same subject, which is now in the Musee d'Orsay, Paris, and was painted in 1857. Walking the fields around the small town of Barbizon, one theme returned to Millet's artistic sensibility repeatedly: gleaning, the age-old right of peasants to collect the grain left in the fields after the harvest.(r.e.lewis)

Etching with drypoint, plate size 22 1/4 x 13 5/8 inches, c. 1900, pencil signed. Helleu began his art career when he enrolled at the Ecole des Beaux Arts and worked as an apprentice for Theodore Deck, decorating ceramic plates with women's portraits. He became friends with many artists of La Belle Epoch, including John Singer Sargent, Whistler, Tissot, Monet and Rodin, and became well known for his elegant portraits of women of French society. He traveled between France and America, and in 1912 was commissioned to create the astrological ceiling decoration in New York's Grand Central Station.

Drypoint and aquatint etching, 1906, signed and numbered 14/50 in pencil, published by Sagot, Paris as blindstamped. Image size 15 3/4 x 11 3/4 inches, paper size is 23 by 16 inches. The image is printed on medium weight wove-type paper. Catalog Reference: Ginestet & Pouillon, 152. This is one of his earlier examples of Belle Epoque style.

Landscape with a Cow drinking

This is an original etching by Rembrandt titled:" Landscape with a cow Drinking". This etching was created circa 1650, printed on an early laid type paper, no visible watermarks. The image measures 4 1/8X5 3/16. 1/8 inch borders all around. The catalog description reads, Bjorklund's second state of 3, before the additional work on the building at the right, Usticke's second state of 6. An even impression with strong contrasts including the lightly etched distant landscape formation. Barsch 237. This etching came in an early mat with a pencil inscription "ex G.T.Cloughe Coll"...Very good condition a faint light spot center right in the sky but unobtrusive. Properly hinged at the upper edges of the sheet.... A fine rich etching.

En Plein Soleil (In the Sunlight)

An etching from 1881. This impression is pencil signed in the lower left, with the artist's red stamp in the lower right. It is plate signed in the lower left as well. Plate measures 7 7/8 x 11 3/4 inches on 10 x 14 inch watermarked laid paper. Catalog: Beraldi 45. Edition of 100. This etching has a rich drypoint burr and a wide tonal range. A plate from the album A Portfolio of Autograph Etchings, published by James R. Osgood and Company, Boston, 1881; printed by Goulding, London, 1881. The scene depicted is likely of Tissot's garden in St. John's Wood, London. The woman on the right is the artist's companion, Kathleen Newton, at left; her children, Cecil George Newton and Muriel Mary Violet Newton, and two unidentified figures. Tissot attended the Ecole des Beaux Arts along with James McNeill Whistler and Degas. He relocated to London after fighting in the Franco-Prussian war and in 1864 exhibited his oil paintings at the Royal Academy. He quickly became well known for his portraits of high-society women but retreated to a life of domesticity with his mistress Kathleen, whom he loved dearly. He never fully recovered from her death in 1882 and returned to Paris afterwards with a newfound interest in religion and spirituality.

This is a drypoint etching from 1939. #40 in his "French Church" series. Catalog: Fletcher 317. Edition of 312, an early proof of the second and final state. The blue paper and inky fingerprints on the back of the paper indicate that this is likely a trial proof. Plate measures 14 3/4 x 12 inches on blue watermarked laid paper. Alternatively titled "The North Portal of Chartres Cathedral." Pencil signed and dated in the lower right. Winner of the Artist Member Prize, Annual Exhibition, Baltimore Water Color Club, The Baltimore Museum of Art, 1939. It took the artist about 1,000 hours to etch this print, and upon closer inspection of the captivating detail in every single piece of stone, it's clear to see why. One of his most sought-after prints.

The Irish Fair

Joie de Vivre

This is a colored drypoint etching from 1929. It is pencil signed in the lower right with the windmill blindstamp in the lower left. In the upper left: "copyright 1929 by L. Icart, Paris." The plate measures 23 x 15 inches in a 35 x 24 inch high quality ornate French style gold frame. Catalog: Holland 356, this print is on the catalog cover. Icart was born in Toulouse, France, and began drawing at an early age. He was particularly interested in fashion, and he quickly rose to fame producing etchings for major design studios at a time when fashion was undergoing a radical change from the conservativeness of the late nineteenth century to the simple, clingy lines of the early twentieth century. His style, though modern, drew inspiration from 18th century French masters like Jean Antoine Watteau, Francois Boucher, and Jean Honore Fragonard. He fought in WWI, continuing to make art as an escape, and before long his art became a symbol of the Art Deco movement.

The Landing

Original pencil signed drypoint etching by American artist Frank Benson 1862-1951. The title of this work is "The Landing", created and printed in 1915 in an edition of only 50. The image measures 7 1/4X11 1/4 inches. Printed on Shogun watermarked paper. The etching appears in the Ordeman catalog as image number 70. The setting of this image was Fox Island on Penobscot Bay. Excellent condition matted not framed. Editioned as 46/50.

An evocative self portrait by German Expressionist artist Kathe Kollwitz, lithograph, image size approximately 18 1/2 x 11 1/2 inches, sheet size 22 3/8 x 18 inches, 1938. Kollwitz was known for her dramatic images of the poor, especially women and children, and the stark realities of poverty and war. She also created many self portraits over the course of her long career, this litho being her last one.

This is an original aquatint etching by French artist Georges Rouault titled: " Le Director de Theatre", The Theater Director. From the series "Reincarnations of Pere Ubu", This is a rare hand signed impression lower right and also inscribed as M/O lower left. This etching was created and printed in 1928. The image measures 12X7 3/4 inches. It is printed on a medium weight wove type paper. Some light toning in the border area. Rouault was known to experiment with his etchings, this one not only has aquatint etching but also some roulette work, drypoint and use of a burnisher. A very rich heavily inked impression. The Swan

This is an original etching by Scandinavian artist Anders Zorn 1860-1920. The title of this piece is "The Swan", (Svanen) It was created and printed in 1915, one of his most impressive of the nude bather series of his etchings. The image mesures 9 3/4X 7 5/8 inches. Printed on a laid paper with an extensive crown watermark. The etching is signed and dated lower right and also hand signed in pencil in the lower right border. Fine condition, wide borders all around, a very slight line of toning where an early window mat lay, not visible in the new matting. The image appears in the Hjert & Hjert catalog as image 276.
