Ragged Sails

Etching from 1925. Plate signed and dated and dated in the lower right. Numbered in ink in the lower left, print 3 in an edition of 60, ink signed "Lumsden imp", indicating that the artist printed it himself. Plate measures 10 7/8 x 11 7/8 on 12 1/2 x 14 7/8 inch watermarked laid type paper. Catalog: C 505. Made during his eastern trips to India. This print has effective use of plate tone to depict sky and sea and interesting linework in the sails. Lumsden was elected an associate of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers in 1909 and raised to the full membership in 1915. He was elected an Associate of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1923 and a full member in 1933; and he was President of the Society of Artist Printers from 1929 to 1947.

Etching and drypoint from 1880. This is a rare image, not found in the Gilcrease catalog. Monogramed in the plate lower left. Plate measures 3 1/2 x 7 1/2 inches on 9 x 12 inch laid type paper. Minor tears on edges of sheet, well away from the image. This print has a beautiful composition and fine details, a rich impression of this scarce etching.

Drypoint etching from 1861. State 4 of 6. This image was part of the Thames set published in 1871. Catalog: Glasgow 86. The location is a forge in the small town of Perros-Guirec in Brittany. Plate signed and dated in the lower right. Plate measures 7 1/2 x 12 3/8 on 9 x 14 2/8 inch laid type paper A well-inked impression with a a rich drypoint burr.

Etching and drypoint from 1922. Pencil signed in the lower right. One of a series of five etchings from his series "The Arteries of Great Britain." Published by Dickins in 1922, in an edition of 425. Catalog: Dickins 73. Image measures 5 1/2 x 7 1/2 inches on 9 1/2 x 12 1/4 inch wove type paper. The scene is of the open Swing Bridge, from a vantage point of the High Level Bridge, Newcastle upon Tyne. An atmospheric print with selectively wiped plate tone. Walcot was born in Russia, the son of a British father and Russian mother.
