Original etching by the British artist, Arthur Brisco, measuring 6 1/2 x 10 7/8 inches, 1926, signed and numbered; 62/75, cat: Hurst-158. Britain's "General Strike" was the theme of Brisco's dramatic image of "The Orator". The strike, mainly by coal-miners upset with their goverments' reduction in wages and worsening conditions, also included dockers, printers, power station workers and transport workers, thus Brisco's interest in the subject.

This is a very rare nocturnal scene by French artist Auguste- Louis Lepere. Etching, image size is 4 1/4 x 3 7/8 inches, 1893, cat: LB-71, pencil signed and numbered "16". Auguste-Louis Lepere was one of the leading French printmakers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He began studying printmaking at the age of 13 with Joseph Burn Smeeton in Paris and quickly made a name for himself with his innovative style and technically brilliant etchings and wood engravings. This etching is exquisitely rendered with the soft light from the street lamp and the moon illuminating the scene, casting deep shadows in the foreground with the city gently silhouetted in the background. A very rich impression printed on a laid type paper with ample margins.

Woman Reading

This is a very fine original wood engraving by British artist John Nash. The image size is 6 x 4 1/2 inches, published c. 1930 in a very small edition of 20, pencil signed and titled in the lower margin. Primarily a self taught artist, John Nash was a renowned painter and printmaker and founding member of several prestigious artist groups, including the London Group in 1914, the Society of Wood Engravers in 1920 and the Colchester Art Society in 1946. He served on the front lines during WWI before being appointed an official war artist in 1918, and later continued his service as war artist during WWII. Many of his images portray events during the wars, but he also created many landscapes and quiet, peaceful images of domestic life, such as this intimate scene of a woman reading, surrounded by books and a violin.

This is an original pencil signed etching by American artist Isac Friedlander. The title of this piece is "Whitter", a view of the aftermath of the war. This etching was created and printed in 1945 in a very small edition of only 30 signed proofs. This one is inscribed as a "Trial Proof #3", the image measures 10 7/8X12 3/4 inches. printed on a medium weight laid type paper. Isac Friedlander (1890-1968) was born in Latvia. In 1912 he went to Italy where he met and worked with Russian artist Maxim Gorky. During this period he also received his only art training, studying etching, drawing and relief printing at the Academy of Rome. In 1937, he emigrated to New York where he worked full time as an artist until his death. He is best known for his woodcuts and etchings, and many museums have works by the artist, including the Smithsonian, Bibliotheque Nationale, and the Brooklyn Museum.

Frank Benson was a very successful painter and a member of "The Ten" along with Childe Hassam and J. Alden Weir, before he began the sporting paintings and etchings for which he is most widely known. He was a founding member of the Boston Guild of Artists and a long time teacher at the Museum School in Boston.

A very fine sporting etching by Frank Benson, this image measures 9 3/4 x 14 3/4 inches, published in 1924, cat: Ordeman-231, pencil signed below the image, titled on the lower edge of the sheet. Benson was a very successful painter and a member of "The Ten" along with Childe Hassam and J. Alden Weir, before he began his sporting paintings and etchings for which he is most widely known. In 1912, at the age of 50, Benson began his etchings and drypoints, mainly of wild fowl which he depicted with expressive lines and rich toning that exquisitely captured the life and energy of the wild birds. His etchings were in high demand from the very start, and have remained favorites for collectors ever since. He was a founding member of the Boston Guild of Artists and a long time teacher at the Museum School in Boston.
