Etchings

This 1875 etching by Johan Barthold Jongkind measures 5 3/4 x 8 3/4 inches, plate signed and dated, IV/VI, J-19. Title, publisher and artist printed below image. Framed.

This is an atmospheric original etching and aquatint in color by Tavik Frantisek Simon, titled "Boulevard Saint Martin in Winter". The image size is 12 1/4 x 14 1/2 inches, published in 1914, pencil signed, with a blindstamp lower left. T. F. Simon was born in Bohemia, now the Czech Republic. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague and traveled extensively throughout Europe, as well as Asia and the U.S. He lived in Paris from 1905-1913, then returned to Prague to teach at the Academy of Fine Arts.

This etching by F.M Spiegle measures 10 x 7 inches. It is pencil signed on the lower margin and published by Klackner, NY. in 1888.

Soft ground etching and aquatint, 8 x 11 7/8 inches, 1918, IV state, edition of about 21, printed by Ernest Haskell, cat. Czestochowski-60, alternatively titled "Autumn", pencil signed lower right.

This incredible image by the British etcher, Arthur Briscoe, measures 8 1/8 x 15 3/8 inches, inked signed and numbered, 73/75, created in 1931. Briscoe studied at the Slade Art School and the Academy Julian in Paris and then spent the rest of his time sailing, becoming one of the most prominent British marine artists of the 20th century. He owned his own three ton cutter which he used to sail around the Essex coast. Also crewing on a Polish ship, he sketched every aspect of life on the boat. Most of Briscoe's etchings show sailing ships and the men who sailed them.

Etching by the American artist, Joseph Pennell, measuring 11 x 8 inches, pencil signed, 1904, cat: Werth-349, repair tear within image. Pennell was an important American etcher, lithographer and illustrator. Good friends with James McNeill Whistler, he and his wife co-authored his biography. Pennell was known for his continued experimentation with technique and style, producing cityscapes, landscapes and marine scenes.

3 x 3 inch etching on 8 x 6 wove-type paper. Pencil signed in the lower right. C. 1929. Likely etched from her summer home in Gloucester, Massachusetts.

This etching attributed to Nicolaes Berchem measures 10 1/4 x 8 1/8 inches. Berchem was a well-known Dutch painter and etcher who created many pastoral landscapes often with biblical themes.
