European Paintings

This is an original oil on canvas painting by French artist Pierre-Marie Beyle.  This work created circa 1880 measures 13X7 inches, no apparent signature visible.  Some cracking to the paint but very presentable as it now appears in a late 19th century gilt frame.  There is little doubt that this is the work of Beyle in style, subject and technique.

This is a fine watercolor painting by British artist Myles Birket Foster (1825-1899)  The title is Along the Cornish Coast, created circa 1890 this painting has the artist's monogram 'BF" lower left corner.  The painting measures 8 1/2X20 inches, with the original gold matting in a modern gold frame.  Myles Birket Foster RWS was a British illustrator, watercolourist and engraver in the Victorian period. His name is also to be found as Myles Birkett Foster.

Framed watercolor portrait, sight size 7 1/2 by 5 1/2 inches in 12 3/4 x 10 Italian carved gilt frame. Signed and dated in the lower right corner. Inscription on the back of the frame has the artist's name, date, and the name of the sitter, Lady Adelaide Horatia Elizabeth Seymour. Lady Seymour lived from 1825-1877 and married Vice Admiral Spencer.
Corbaux belonged to the Society of British Artists and the New Society of Painters in Watercolors in 1839.

This is an early Sicilian Donkey Cart Fragment, circa 1800.  Unsigned as usual.  THere is some writing on the bottom edge but is mostly worn away.  The thick oak board was cracked in the center and was repaired many years ago.  Still the color is rich and the composition is mostly intact.  This sort of decoration was in use in Sicily for hundreds of years as a decoration to their Donkey carts.  We feel this is from the mid to early 19th century.  The board measures 15X20 inches.

Inscription in German in pencil reads: "Wenn se Dir man blos nich erwischen - Justav!" "hab man Keene Angst ick Kenne den Rummel - ick war selba Polizeipra'sident'!" Which roughly translates to: "Don't get caught!" "Have no fear, I know the Head of Police!"
