This is a 9 x 12 inch oil on canvas in an ornate gold 15 x 18 1/4 inch frame, signed "G. A Hays" in the lower left. The title and date of creation are inscribed on the back. C. 1909. George Arthur Hays was born in Greenville, New Hampshire and spent his adult life in Providence, becoming one of Rhode Island's most popular 19th century artists. Hays self taught and was a member of the Providence Art Club, where he exhibited from 1888 to 1940, the Society for Independent Artists, the Copley Society, and the Providence Water Color Club. He painted in both watercolor and oil and is known for his bucolic landscapes of cows and sheep.
