This is an oil on canvas painting that measures 18 x 24 inches in a gold 24 x 29 3/4 inch frame, and is signed in the lower left. A luminous painting with incredible colors. Charles Franklin Pierce was born in Sharon, NH and spent his early years on the family farm, where he found inspiration for his paintings. In 1864 he moved to Boston to attend art school and from there went to England, Scotland, and Wales to sketch the countryside. Pierce moved back to Boston, became a leader of the Boston Art Club, and married Luena Wilder of Peterborough, also a notable artist. Together they spent over a year in Europe before returning to New England, whereupon they bought a house at 59 Pine St. in Peterborough and remained married for 30 years until her death in 1906. Six years later, he married Sarah Katherine Plimpton of Massachusetts. They continued to live at his estate in Peterborough and in Brookline, Massachusetts, where he painted until his death in 1920.
This is an incredibly detailed, atmospheric Norwegian landscape of a small cabin at the edge of a fjord, the distant hills fading into a soft morning mist. It is painted in oil on panel, 11 x 16 inches, 1871, clearly signed "A Rasmussen 71" in the lower right corner, in an ornate period gilt frame.
Oil on canvas, signed "Richet" in the lower right. Sight size measures 21 x 17 inches, housed in a tasteful 25 1/2 x 21 1/2 inch gold frame. Léon Richet was raised during the height of the Barbizon school and was influenced by the works of Rousseau. He was a prolific painter whose works appear in many collections.
Signed and dated "F. Van Severdonck f. 1863" in the lower left, inscribed and signed by the artist on the reverse.

This is an original oil on canvas painting by American artist Frank Vining Smith (1879-1967) This painting is clearly signed lower right corner. This painting although in the catalog is titled: "Sunset Glow" on the back of the canvas is an alternate title: "The New Moon" The canvas measures 22X30 inches and comes in a fine custom gilt frame. This painting was originally sold through Anderson Galleries in Chicago. They promoted Smiths works in the late 1920's.

THE annually recurrent exhibition of paintings of ships and the sea by Frank Vining Smith at the Anderson Galleries always makes an agreeable event about this season. Some thirty of Mr. Smith’s new canvases have just been hung at Anderson’s, and the impression they give is possibly more favorable than it has been in the past.
Even granting the sea’s changeless, ever-changing character and the myriad sorts and conditions of ships that sail it, Mr. Smith’s fertility and inventiveness appear more remarkable than ever in this exhibition. His knowledge of his subject is profound, in the opinion of sailors, who are always harsh critics. His ability to paint workmanlike pictures has long been established. But the ease with which he continues to find variations on a now familiar theme remain surprising." This is a very fine study of a view of the sea right after sunset.
This is an original oil on board painting by Canadian artist Albert Edward Cloutier ((1902-1965) Signed lower center, this painting has an image area of
29X35 inches. It came to us in what appears to be the original frame with the Walter Klinkhoff Gallery,Montreal, label on the back. The title of this work is:
"Winter Lac Ouimet, Mont Tremblant", it is a view of the Laurentian Mountains of Quebec. Albert Cloutier was a painter, commercial artist and muralist who grew up in Montreal. He also lived in Ottawa and during his time as a war artist was posted in several locations in eastern Canada. He was a member of the R.C.A. and also the CSGA. He moved to Saint-Hilaire, Quebec in 1959 where he lived the rest of his life. His mediums were primarily oils and graphics. His subjects were landscapes, commercial art and (during the war)the military. His style was expressionist and greatly influenced by the Group of Seven.
He studied art under A.Y.Jackson and Edwin Holgate. And from 1955 until 1965 he taught at the École des Beaux-Arts in Montreal.
This is an original oil on panel painting by Dublin/Boston artist Margarita Pumpelly Smyth (1873-1959) Known as Daisy, she studied under Abbott Thayer in Dublin N.H.
This painting was shown at the Worcester Art Museum in the 1902 Summer Exhibit , the label is on the back along with a brass plaque from a Boston framer. Included in the show that year was the work of Frank Benson ,Edmund Tarbell, Mary Cassatt, Edward Redfield and Childe Hassam. The painting measures 30X22 inches, it is signed lower left but only is visible with a direct light, a black light shows it well. The painting is titled "Charlotte", probably painted in 1901-02. Daisy was an American Bahá'í, painter and roommates with Juliet Hutchings Thompson .. Although Married Daisy was quite independent. She and Thompson traveled together extensively by them selves. While her works are quite rare this one does show some of the early influences of Thayer and of course many of the later French artists of this time period.
This is a signed oil on canvas painting adhered to a board, measuring 17 x 11 1/4 inches in a 21 x 15 inch gold frame. William Preston Phelps was a plein air painter, known as the "Painter of Monadnock." He spent most of his life in Dublin and Chesham, NH, and he painted many landscapes of farms, fields, and forests, on and around Mount Monadnock. In 1876, he traveled to Europe and began studying at the Royal Academy of Art in Munich. He later moved to New York and then back to Europe with his friend William Meritt Chase.
Oil on canvas, 18 x 23 1/2 inches, in a very fine period gilt and gesso frame. There is a partial obscure signature and date in the painting lower right, the early label on the back is from the gallery of Charles G. Calder who was a well known Providence, R.I. painting dealer, also on the back is a partial label from Whitaker studios. This is a fine Barbizon style landscape painting by American artist George William Whitaker. Whitaker was a teacher and important painter in Providence R.I. and was known as an American tonalist, influenced by George Inness and Alexander Wyant. At a young age he traveled to Paris where his paintings became heavily influenced by the Barbizon painters of the Fontainebleu, especially the talented Francois Millet. George Whitaker's excellence in art is equaled to his contribution to the development of a Rhode Island art community. He was instrumental in recognizing the need for an organization to nurture and support the talented artists within the state. The Providence Art Club was formally instituted in 1880 by Whitaker and his friends Sydney Burleigh, E.M. Bannister and Charles Walter Stetson.
This is an original oil on canvas painting by American artist James Gale Tyler (1855-1931) Tyler is the well known marine painter of the age of sail. The title of this piece which appears hand written on the back is: "Clipper nearing Port", this painting was done circa 1900. It has a canvas size of 24X20 inches and is in a heavy modern hand carved frame. The overall frame size is: 32X28 inches. The painting is clearly signed lower left. The painting is in good shape, no tears or inpainting, not relined it could use a very light cleaning but it is quite presentable as it now appears. Ready to hang on your wall.
A lovely scene of the Dutch countryside during summer harvest by Berend Adrianus Bongers. The painting size is 14 3/4 x 28 3/4 inches and is housed in a period frame measuring 25 1/2 x 39 inches. Signed by the artist on the lower right with a date of "1906" found on the back of the frame. Bongers was a "Delft" master and painted in the manner of the "Hague School" where views of domestic life and its daily activities were often painted. Educated at the Academy of Art in The Hague, he painted landscapes, portraits, genre scenes and still lifes. He was a draftsman, engraver, watercolorist and teacher. For many years he was the "chef d'atelier" at Delft Pottery.
Oil on canvas, 14 x 20 inches, signed lower left. Marie Osthaus Griffith was the older sister of Edmund Henry Osthaus, one of the most successful painters of hunting dogs in the United States in the 19th century.
This is an oil on canvas painting. Signed "C. P Appel" in the lower left and dated 1923. Painting measures 12 1/4 x 18 1/4 inches in a 17 5/8 x 23 1/2 inch 20th century gilt frame. Appel is known for romantic landscapes and marine paintings in Tonalist and Impressionistic styles. He studied at the New York School of Art with Francis Luis Mora and William Merritt Chase and later with Frank Vincent DuMond at The Art Students League. He became a member of the Salmagundi Club in New York City in 1906.
A fine luminist seascape by American artist Franklin Dullin Briscoe (1844-1903) The painting measures 14X11 inches, painted on academy board. Signed lower left. Housed in a period gilt frame. "History and marine painter Franklin Dullin Briscoe was born in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1844 and studied in Philadelphia with Edward Moran in 1860. Like many of his contemporaries, he then went abroad to further his artistic education, visiting London and Paris before returning home and establishing his studio in Philadelphia. Briscoe made several more ocean voyages during his career, experiences that inspired the dramatic seascapes and shipping scenes for which he is today best known. The weather was an especially important factor in his work, whether capturing fishermen returning after a long day’s work under calm, luminist skies to his paintings of storm-tossed ships and sailors at the mercy of the wind and waves."
