Le Bassin Neuf a La Rochelle

This finely done scene of a boat bassin in France's seaport city of La Rochelle measures 7 3/4 x 12 1/4 inches. Created in 1904, it is plate signed and titled and also pencil signed, titled and numbered. The paper is a heavy weight Arches with the publishers seal on the lower right corner, margins are wide with the total sheet size measuring 12 x 17 1/8 inches. Leheutre studied to be a painter but after seeing an exhibit of Whistler etchings exhibited in 1892 by Georges Petit, he switched from painting to printmaking concentrating primarily on landscapes or city scenes.

Etching, image size 7 5/8 x 11 1/2 inches, 1926, plate signed l.l. "G. Leheutre", pencil signed l.r. "G. Leheutre" and editioned as 23, publishers stamp "Sagot" l.r. Known as "the French Whistler", Leheutre switched from painting to printmaking after he saw Whistlers work. Member of the group of Nabis, Post-Impressionist avant-garde artists who set the pace for fine arts and graphic arts in France in the 1890's.
