Takeda Katsuyori

Woodblock, image size 15 3/4 x 10 3/8 inches, after Sadanobu Hasegawa, from the Uchida Woodblock Printing Co., Kyoto, Japan depicting the samurai "Takeda Katsuyori" from the kabuki play "Honcho Nijushiko" which tells the story of two noble Japanese families caught in the middle of a murder scheme. Provenance on label adhered to back. Publishers seal and artist signature on u.r. and l.l.

Velasquez

A rare artist's proof by Leonard Baskin, this woodcut was published c. 1963 in a small edition of 50 impressions. Cat: Fern & O'Sullivan-458, pencil signed and inscribed "Artist's Proof". In the era of abstract expressionism, Leonard Baskin’s work was always representational, with a strong classical influence. He drew inspiration from many artists of the past, and in the 1950s and 1960s created series of portraits of the artists he admired including this image of Spanish Baroque artist Diego Velasquez.

The Lovers

This is a lovely Utamaro color woodblock print measuring 14 1/4 x 9 1/2 inches. This image was recarved in the early 20th century. Signed center left, framed.

Portfolio of 16 Prints

Portfolio of prints by Leonard Baskin, sheet size of each print is 22 x 16 inches, 1962, numbered 95/100, published by The Friends of Art, Boston University. This portfolio includes 15 reproductions, one original woodblock print as well as an original pencil signed woodblock; and a pencil signed and numbered colophon sheet. This portfolio is very rare, from the first 100 published before the edition of 500.

The Victor

Woodblock, image size 8 7/8 x 9 1/2 inches, pencil signed, titled and edition number, "Ernest W. Watson", "27/100" and "The Victor". A New England native, Watson graduated from Massachusetts College of Art and later in life co-founded the Berkshire Summer School of Art. He possessed a genuine desire for all to be able to understand the nuances of art and so began a lifelong career of creating instructional books and magazines on how to draw, paint and sculpt.

Facing East

Portfolio written by James Michener, prints and sketches by Jack Levine. First limited edition, numbered 804/2500, Maecenas Press, Random House, New York, 1970, signed in pen and ink on colophon sheet by Jack Levine and James Michener. Part I of this folio contains text by James Michener, four original lithographs by Levine, and one original "hors-texte" woodblock. Part II contains Levine's sketchbook with 54 pochoir and phototype process reproductions of his watercolors, gouaches and drawings, finished by hand. All contained in a silk clamshell box with goatskin closure.

Hyena

A fine pencil signed proof by Leonard Baskin, this image was created in 1951 for "A Little Book of Natural History", published by Gehenna Press. The image size is approx. 3 x 4 inches, created in 1951, cat: Fern & O'Sullivan-108, pencil signed.
