20th Century American Prints

A beautiful architectural cityscape by master printmaker, Joseph Pennell. Measuring 8 x 11 inches, it is pencil signed, publishers label included. Created in 1905 in an edition of probably 75, cat: Wuerth #379. Pennell was an important American etcher, lithographer and illustrator. Good friends with James McNeill Whistler, he and his wife co-authored his biography. Pennell was known for his continued experimentation with technique and style, producing cityscapes, landscapes and marine scenes. He also printed many of his own images.

This is a remarkable architectural etching by American artist Hopper Emory. Image size 14 7/8 x 11 3/4 inches, c. 1930, edition of 250, pencil signed, with the original label. Hopper Emory was born in Baltimore, Maryland and had a successful career in banking before he turned exclusively to his artwork. He traveled to England where he studied at the Heatherly School of Art in London, then returned to Maryland where he became known for his delicately rendered architectural and maritime etchings.

Etching, image size 8 x 5 3/4 inches, pencil signed l.r. "Warren Davis" on wove paper. Davis studied at the Art Students League in New York and became known for his etchings of idealized female figures. Many were used on the covers of Vanity Fair and Life magazines. Later in his career Davis exhibited in Europe and the United States including the Pennsylvania Academy and the Salmagundi Club.

This is an original pencil signed color etching by American artist Troy Kinney.  The title of this work is: "Sophie Pflanz in Cleopatre", it was created and printed in 1917.  The etching is editioned as 10/88...  The image appears in the Kinney catalog as image number 16, the image measures 11 3/8X8 1/2 inches.

This is an original etching by American artist Troy Kinney.  The title of this work is: "The Rehearsal", it  was created and printed in 1929.  The subject is the Rehearsal of the Gavrilov Ballet Troupe, with Mr. Anesander Gavrilov and Miss Geraldine Spencer.  This etching is pencil signed and inscribed," with best wishes to my friend Dr. Conrad Bevens...?  The image measures 8 1/2X11 3/4 inches.  Printed on a medium weight wove type paper.

This is a rare early Louis Orr etching done while he was living in France.  The title is: Hillside, Avignon France.  It was created and printed in 1911 in an edition of 40 impressions.  The image measures 8 7/8X 11 3/4 inches.  Pencil signed lower right border.  A fine study in shadows and highlights.  This etching appears to be in the original frame, but in fine condition.  The castle like building on the hill is: Palais des Papes, the worlds largest gothic building. It was built in the 1300's...

This is an original pencil signed etching by American artist Anton Schutz.  The title is : Three Giants, a view of the New York Harbor, made and printed in 1927.  The image measures 13 5/8X10 1/16 inches.  This etching is framed.

This is a fine original wood engraving by American artist Stefan Hirsch (1899-1964)  The title is Snake, created and printed in 1931, the image measures 4X6 inches, on a sheet size of 9 1/2X11 1/2 inches,  pencil signed and numbered as 5/30.  A rare image, only one example is in the collection of the Whitney Museum.

This is a fine wood engraving by Boston printmaker, Shirley Thomson Hadley (1917-) Hadley was the President of the Boson Printmakers Club.  This image titled Old Marblehead was created and printed in 1949 and was given as the 1949 presentation print of the BPC.  This woodengraving is pencil signed, titled and numbered as 18/300.  The image measures 9X7 inches, printed on a hand made wove type paper.

This is an original woodblock print by American artist Albert Abramovitz.  This view of roof tops is pencil signed lower right border.  The image measures 10X12 inches , printed on a medium weight laid type paper.  Created and printed circa 1920's.

This is an original etching and drypoint by American artist Samuel Chamberlain.  The title is: Boston Fish Pier, it was created and printed in 1929 in an edition of 100.  THis pencil signed impression measures 5  5/8X8 5/8 inches.  Printed on an antique laid type paper.  The image appears in the Chamberlain catalog as image number 82.

This is perhaps the best known etching by American Regionalist, John E. Costigan.  The title is: Fishermen Three, it was created and printed in 1938 and sold by Associated American Artists in New York.  This etching has an image size of 8 7/8X11 7/8 inches  Hand signed in pencil lower border.  This image appears in the book, A Treasury of American Prints by Craven.

This is a fine drypoint etching by American artist Samuel Chamberlain.  The title is: Stonington Sunset,  it was created and printed in  March 1936, this pencil signed and numbered: 45/100 and is also inscribed to "Bill and Kathie Best Wishes" in the lower left border, the image measures 9 7/8X14 5/8 inches.  This image appears in the Chamberlain catalog as image number 124.  Nicely framed with archival matting...

This is an original large etching by American artist and illustrator Alan James Robinson.  This image is titled: Green Turtle, it is an artist proof and hand signed in pencil.  The image measures 18X23 1/2 inches.  Richly printed on a thick wove type sheet,  Robinson is best known for his animal illustrations.
