20th Century European Prints

This is an original etching by French artist Auguste Lepere.  The title of this work is: "Quartiers de pecheurs", it was created and printed in 1915.  This etching is pencil signed and has the edition number of: 38/50.  The image measures 7 1/4X7 3/4 inches.  Printed on a thin laid type paper.

This is a fine drypoint etching by British artist Sir Henry Rushbury.  The subject is the destruction of St. Olave's cathedral on  Tooley Street in Bermondsey.  This drypoint is hand signed by the artist with pen and ink in the lower border.  The image measures 11 3/8X8 1/16 inches.  Very richly printed on a medium weight wove type paper.  This image created in 1927.  "the demolition in process of a historic London dockside church, St Olave's, Bermondsey/ Southwark. This took place because of local depopulation and the church being given 'redundant' status. Demolition took place in two stages and Rushbury has cleverly seized the moment when the nave was all but destroyed (1926) but the tower was still intact. This didn't last long, and it was demolished in turn in 1928. Building materials and debris litter the foreground."

This is a fine original etching by British printmaker Ernest Lumsden.  The title is: Mosque and Temple, created and printed in 1914 as plate no. 2 from His Indian Series.  This etching is hand signed in pencil with the "imp" after his name meaning that he printed this impression himself.  It is also inscribed as: "4th trial state no. 2" lower left border.  It appears in the Lumsden catalog as image number 167.  The image measures 8X9 7/8 inches.  Printed on a medium weight wove type sheet.

This is a fine original etching by French artist Auguste Brouet (1872-1941)  The title is: Un rassemblement en Camargue, it was created and printed in 1925.  This image is numbered as 44/75 ..The image measures 8X12 1/4 inches.  the Cercle de la Librairie drystamp. in the lower right border.  Hand signed and numbered in pencil.  Fine condition with elaborate remarque in the lower border.  Boutitie 320, IFF 36.1, BPL 13, Universität Osnabrück, EH 4.

This drypoint etching of the English landscape painter, Charles March Gere, c. 1927, measures 12 x 10 1/4 inches and is pencil signed on the lower right margin. Francis Dodd was born in Wales and trained at the Glasgow School of Art winning the Haldane Scholarship in 1893 enabling him to travel and study in France, Italy and Spain. During WWI he became a portrait war artist producing more than 30 portraits of senior officers. After the war he gained considerable notoriety for his watercolors as well as his printmaking.

This is a fine example of the color aquatint etchings of Austrian artist Tavik František Šimon  The title is: "APSE OF NOTRE-DAME DE PARIS IN WINTER", it was created and printed in 1924 in an edition of 300 published by the Society of Graveurs Modernes in Paris.  The image measures 12 3/8X17 3/4 inches.  The etching is pencil signed by the artist lower border.

This lovely atmospheric image by William Wyllie measures 4 7/8 x 12 7/8 inches, pencil signed on the l.l. and created c. 1920. This is a view of Greenich from the Isle of Dogs with a view of the Royal Navel Academy on the left with the domes of the Royal Observatory high in the background. Wyllie was a well known marine painter and printmaker, studying at the Heatherley School of Fine Art and then at the at the Royal Academy. At the age of 18, Wyllie won the Turner Gold Medal for his painting "Dawn After A Storm". He went on to have a long artistic career, specializing in paintings and etchings of the sea and the city of London. In this etching, Wyllie uses remarkably delicate lines and subtle tones to create an atmospheric image in this busy harbor scene.

This is a finely detailed line engraving by British artist Robert Sargen Austin.  The title is: "The Pack Bridge, Aylestone, Leicestershire".  The image measures 4 13/16X4 7/16 inches.  It was created and printed in 1926 and appears in the Dodgson catalog as image number 65.  It was printed in an edition of 60.  

This is a fine original etching by British artist Arthur Briscoe, the title is James and John, this etching was created and printed in 1928 in an edition of 75 signed impressions.  This one is signed and numbered 43/75 in sepia ink.  This is one of his finest images, a couple of Dutch Hengsts moored at Zijpe in Walcheren.  The image measures 9 3/4X13 3/4 inches  Printed on a laid type, watermarked paper.  The borders are a bit trimmed but still enough room for proper presentation.  Printed in a warm toned ink, nice use of plated tone in the sea and sky..

This is a scarce original etching by British artist William Strang.  The title is: The Walls of the Alhambra, 1912, printed in an edition of 50.  This pencil signed impression measures 12X11 7/8 inches.  Printed with a warm toned ink on a medium weight laid type sheet.  Very nice condition wide margins all around.  (Our photo is a partial view of the etching)

This is a very richly inked original etching, image size 8 5/8 x 11 1/8 inches, 1939, published by the Print Club, Cleveland, Ohio, plate signed and dated, pencil signed. Edmund Blampied was a very successful artist and illustrator in early 20th century Britain. He illustrated many books and magazines, but is best known for his remarkable skills as a printmaker. He was an important figure in the 'British Etching Revival' of the early 20th century, and was elected to the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers in 1920.

Etching, image size 8 1/2 x 12 1/2 inches, 1931, pencil signed. Chahine studied at the Academia Di Belle Arti in Venice and then at the Academy Julien in Paris. He was a very well respected artist in his time, winning many awards and honors for his work. However his prints and paintings are hard to find, many of them were destroyed in a fire at his studio in 1926 or in a later flood in 1942.

This is an original engraving by French artist Jean-Emile Laboureur (1877-1943)  The title is: La Promenade Sur Le Port, it was created and printed 1933 and was used as the presentation print for the Print Club of Cleveland.  In an edition of 235.  This engraving is hand signed in pencil lower left border, printed on a medium weight wove type paper.

This is a very fine early etching by Austrian artist Tavik Frantisek Simon.  The title is : Old Houses in Amsterdam, this etching was created and printed in 1909 in an edition of 150 signed impressions.  This one is numbered as 25.  The image measures 10 1/2X6 1/2 inches.  Hand signed in pencil and also has his distinctive red stamp.Printed on a medium weight wove type paper.

This is an original drypoint etching by British artist Stanley Anderson.  The title is: Quai Duperre, La Rochelle, This etching was created and printed in 1928 in an edition of 85.  The image measures 8 1/4X13 1/4 inches.  Printed on an old laid type paper.  Hand signed in pencil lower border.  This image appears in the R.A.A. catalog as image number 183.
