The sitter is identified in a copy of a letter dated August 3, 1905, from Seth Mendell to William C. Davenport, President of The Machinists' Bank, Taunton, Massachusetts, in an envelope affixed to the back of the painting. Provenance: Estate of N. David Scotti, Providence, Rhode Island.

Canvas size is 13 x 16 inches, signed and dated l.r., housed in a ornate gold frame, identified on a printed German label affixed to the stretcher also with a canvas stencil from Ancienne Maison Valle, Paris, on the reverse, and with a partial Parisian framemaker's label on the back of the frame.

A joyful and luminous painting of a proud farmer admiring his chickens. Signed and dated in the lower right. Painting measures 23 1/2 x 19 3/4 inches in what appears to be the original 34 x 30 inch gilt frame. There is a label on the frame below the image with the date, title, and artist's name. Alfred Banner was a West Midlands painter who excelled in painting landscapes and everyday genre scenes. He exhibited in galleries in London, Birmingham and Kidderminster until his death.

This is a very fine original 19th Century painting in the style of Marinus Adrianus Koekkoek (1807-1868). Oil on panel, 7 1/4 x 8 7/8 inches, c. 1850, unsigned, in an ornate period gilt frame. Although this painting is unsigned, the style and subject are very reminiscent of the work of Dutch artist Marinus Adrianus Koekkoek, who was known for his delicately painted atmospheric landscapes.

Sarah Louisa Kilpack, English, 1839-1909, "Mt St Michel ,Jersey". c. 1880, by British artist, Sarah Louisa Kilpack, measuring 13 x 10 inches with sight size 4 3/4 x 8 1/4 inches, signed l.l., framed, oil on paper on board, location written on backing. Born in London in 1839, at an early age Sarah Louisa Kilpack was recognized as a talented pianist and artist, but after a series of misfortunes she had to give up the piano and concentrated exclusively on her painting. Moving to the Channel Islands between England and France she became known for her watercolors and oils of rocky coastal scenes painted in a dramatic style with fisherman or other hardworking types placed within the stormy landscapes. She exhibited in London at the Society of Women Artists between 1867 and 1909 and also at the British Institution.

Framed watercolor portrait, sight size 7 1/2 by 5 1/2 inches in 12 3/4 x 10 Italian carved gilt frame. Signed and dated in the lower right corner. Inscription on the back of the frame has the artist's name, date, and the name of the sitter, Lady Adelaide Horatia Elizabeth Seymour. Lady Seymour lived from 1825-1877 and married Vice Admiral Spencer.
Corbaux belonged to the Society of British Artists and the New Society of Painters in Watercolors in 1839.

A lovely atmospheric oil on wood panel by the Dutch artist Julius Jacobus van de Sande Bakhuyzen. Image size is 6 3/4 x 10 5/8 inches, framed size is 10 3/4 x 14 1/2 inches, signed l.l., housed in a period qilt frame, c. 1890. Bakhuyzen was born in 1835 in Holland, the son of a well known painter, Hendrik van de Sande Bakhuyzen, who instucted him until he entered the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague. With the schools concentration on drawing and no painting classes, Julius and fellow artists left the Academy and eventually started their own school which was heavily influenced by the realist painters of the French Barbizon school and became known as the "Hague School". Bakhuyzen won the Royal Medal at an exhibition in Amsterdam in 1871.

English Countryside

Attributed to Paul Sandby. Painting measures 5 1/2 x 7 3/4 inches. 1800's. A vibrant and energetic painting despite the gray palette. Paul Sandby, the brother of Thomas Sandby, was an English engraver and painter. He began his artistic career as a landscape painter and draftsman for the Scottish military. As a printmaker, Sandby popularized the use of aquatint, and was considered to be the father of British watercolors. In 1768 the brothers were both among the twenty-eight of the original members of the Royal Academy.
