Born in London in 1839, at an early age Sarah Louisa Kilpack was recognized as a talented pianist and artist, but after a series of misfortunes she had to give up the piano and concentrated exclusively on her painting. Moving to the Channel Islands between England and France she became known for her watercolors and oils of rocky coastal scenes painted in a dramatic style with fisherman or other hardworking types placed within the stormy landscapes. She exhibited in London at the Society of Women Artists between 1867 and 1909 and also at the British Institution.
