20th Century American Prints

This is an original wood block print by American artist Isac Friedlander.  Created circa 1930 this image is titled: "Companions", It is pencil signed and titled in the lower border.  The image measures 11 3/4X9 3/4 inches.  Printed on a medium weight wove type paper.  Isac Friedlander (1890-1968) was born in Mitau, Latvia. He was arrested in 1906 and imprisoned by Russian authorities for anti- Czarist Political activities from 1906 to 1912. He studied art at the Academy of Rome, Italy from 1913 until 1917. He was a friend of Russian writer Maxim Gorky. Friedlander began his printing career in 1915. In 1917 he repatriated to Russia during the Kerensky regime, but in 1929 Friedlander immigrated to the US with the encouragement of his cousin Joseph Hirshhorn.

This is an original etching and drypoint by American artist Louis Rosenberg.  The title is: The Grand Canal, Venice, it is printed on a medium weight laid type paper.  This etching was created and printed in 1927.  The image measures 8 7/8X13 7/8 inches.  Hand signed in pencil lower right border, very fine condition, nice use of plate tone in the sky and water.  A very rare image, Rosenberg at his best!!!...

This is an original aquatint etching by American artist Lester G. Hornby.  It is titled: Marabout Tombs, Tunis, 1909, and is described in the plate as: "Evening of the Bal Masque", the image measures 9 1/2X14 1/2 inches, pencil signed lower right corner.  Printed on a medium weight laid type paper.  This is a very scarce etching.  It appears in the Falk catalog as image number 301.

This is an original pencil signed etching by American artist Louis Orr. This etching is titled: "Pont Marie, Paris" one of his very best etchings. The image measres 11X7 1/2 inches, printed on a medium weight wove type paper. Very richly inked, circa 1930.

 This image is from the series, The Panama Canal, created by American artist Joseph Pennell, the title of this work is: The City of Panama from the Tivoli Hotel, Ancon Hill, created and printed in 1912.  The image measures 22X17 inches on a sheet size of 25 1/2X20 1/2 inches.  Printed on a Fabiano watermarked laid type paper.Wuerth cat. number 242.

This is an original lithograph by American artist Stow Wengenroth, the subject is: Lighthouse Beach, Annisquam, Massachusetts, created and printed in 1976 in an edition of 80.  This impression is inscribed artist proof with his name and well as his printer in the lower border, signed in pencil.  "Burr A Miller, printer".  The image measures 8 3/8X13 7/8 inches.  This image appears in the Stuckey catalog as image number 365.

This is a fine original etching of New York City by American artist Joseph Pennell.  This work is titled: Four Story House, it was created and printed in 1904.  Pencil signed in the lower border, printed on a thin laid type paper.  The image measures 10 3/4X 7 3/8 inches.  In nice original condition, given as a gift to a library in 1952..

This is an original mezzotint by American artist Alessandro Mastro-Valerio.  The title is Morning Paper, created and printed in 1941 as the presentation print of the Chicago Society of Etchers.  The image is pencil signed by the artist lower right and has the blindstamp by the CSE lower left corner of the border.  The image measures 8 15/16X5 9/16 inches.

This is a fine original etching of NYC by American artist Joseph Pennell.  The title is: Lower Broadway, NYC, it was created and printed in 1904.  Pencil signed, this image measures 11 7/8X7 3/4 inches.  Nice use of plate tone in the composition, a fine impression in good original condition.  Once give to the "Friends of the Library in 1952"

This is an original hand signed and titled wood block print by Jamaican artist Albert Huie.  The title is: Market Women, created and printed circa mid -1940's.  The image measures 9 1/2X7 1/4 inches.  

Albert Huie (1920-2010) was a seminal figure in the formation and development of a national Jamaican artistic identity, overcoming the hurdles of a colonial-based system of race and class distinctions to become the first native-born Jamaican artist to attain international renown and respect. Working primarily in the areas of landscape, portraiture, and figurative art, he established a multiple award-winning career that spanned seven decades and earned him the title of “the Father of Jamaican Painting.” 

This is a fine original etching by American artist Otto Ostrowsky.  It was taken from his series on the construction of sections of the New York Subway system in Manhattan, created and printed in 1937.  The image is pencil signed and measures 10X13 1/2 inches.  Printed on a medium weight laid type paper.

This is an original pencil signed lithograph by American artist Albert Sterner.  The title is: The Mussel Openers, Newport.  This image was created and printed in 1913.  The image measures 17 1/8X13 3/4 inches.  A scarce image created in a very small edition.  The only other example can be found in the Amon Carter Museum.

Etching by the American artist, John Taylor Arms measuring 14 x 9 1/2 inches, pencil signed, inscribed "Third State" on lower margin, 1929, edition of 100, printed by Henry E. Carling, from the "French Church Series #26", cat: Fletcher-219. John Taylor Arms was one of the foremost American printmakers of the 20th century, known for his exquisite compositions and exacting details which gave his etchings a very realistic, almost photographic appearance.

This is an original etching by American artist Joseph Pennell. The title of this work is: "Carriage Approach to Pennsylvania Station, N.Y. This etching was created and printed in 1919, in an edition of only 50.
The image measures 11 3/4X7 inches, hand signed in pencil lower border. The signature has the imp after the artists name meaning that he printed this one himself.
