This color woodblock print measures 3 3/4 x 2 5/8 inches on 4 7/8 x 3 1/2 inch wove paper adhered to a 6 x 5 inch Uchima embossed portfolio. Pencil signed and dated December 1970. A simple, yet intriguing modern print using traditional woodblock techniques. Born in California, Uchima returned to Japan at age nineteen, where he worked as a translator for a print collector and discovered the sosaku-hanga (creative print) movement, which incorporated a Western modernist aesthetic. Uchima's work is included in many permanent collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, National Gallery of Art, and the Whitney Museum.
